A Metropolis of birds
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is the smallest yet thickly populated avian sanctuary in the country.  A large number of various Local of birds bird species keep the Sanctuary throbbing with life throughout the year. A large number of different varieties of migratory birds in search of their temporary seasonal abode keep residing here during the season suiting each of the avian species.  These birds migrate from different parts of the world including the Himalayan rangers and  Siberian hills crowd.  These migratory birds co-inhabit with the local bird population in the parks of this sanctuary, thus making this bird sanctuary a true multicultural avian metropolis.

Local Birds : Waterfowls, cuckoos and owls, egret, heron and the water duck.
Migratory Birds : Siberian Cranes, Parrots, teal, larks, flycatchers, wood beetle, darters, drongoes, etc.

Viewing and staying facilities
  • Motor boats are available on hire for watching waterfowl and ducks swimming in the lake and other birds flying in the horizon.
  • The Kumarakom Tourist Complex spread over an area of 101 acres of enchanting woodlands  was earlier run by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC).  Now the complex has been renovated in grand style by the Taj Kerala Resorts Ltd. Boats are available on hire for a a cruise around the sanctuary.
Boat houses are also available if you prefer to live on the lake.
