Indian People and Culture of South

Region Constituting South India:
The population of South India, consisting of three Indian States and a Union Territory, is approximately 233.  The main South Indian languages are Tamil, Telugu, Kannad and Malayalam. People also know English. South India has the highest literacy rate in India, Kerala being on top with of 91 % literacy.

South Indian spicy food consists of rice, fish, coconut, idli, dosa, sambhar, uttapam and curries. Hinduism is the dominant religion consisting of two sects - Shaivite and Vaishnavite. There is sizeable Muslim and Christian population in South India, especially in Kerala. Christmas is celebrated with great enthusiasm in South India. The traditional South Indian dress is saree for women and a white a lungi for men.

The Culture:
Dance  Kathakali, Oppana, Kerala Natanam, Theyyam, Koodiyattam, Mohiniyattam, Bharatnatyam and Kuchipudi.

Music : Karnatic classical music developed independently parallel to Indian(Hindustani) Classical Music. Famous composers of South Indian music are Purandara Dasa, Kanaka Dasa, Tyagaraja and Shyama Shastri.

Film Industry : Tamil Nadu is a hub of South Indian film industry for with studios producing regional films in South Indian languages and a Tamil Nadu Film & TV Institute. 

Craftsmanship : South Indian artists and artisan are highly skilled.  Dravida and Vesara style of rock architecture from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are popular in South India.

Main Temples : Kapileshwar temple, Brihadeshwara temple, Meenakshi temple, Navagraha temple, Krishna temple and Jain temple.

South Indian temples : not only testify its rich ancient heritage but also serve as an opportunity to the tourists to know the people of South India through observing their rituals and ceremonies and through interaction with English speaking local visitors.
