Temple Architecture
The temple of Sri Ramanatha at Rameshwaram has grown into its present gigantic dimensions over centuries.  In its present form, the temple is 264m east to west and 200m north to south with three Prakaras, two big Gopuras and two unfinished ones. In South Indian Temple Architecture, ‘Prakara’ stands for elevated walls and ‘gopura’ for the gateway to temple with pyramid-shaped monumental ornate tower.

At the main eastern entrance, stands a huge Gopura of nine-storey(38.4m high). The outermost, or third, corridor (196m long and 120.4 wide) is an architectural marvel.  It has around four thousand pillars (each 3.7m high) mounted on a 1.5m high platform.

The main shrine is a sactrum for the the Jyotirlingam’ Behind this( Sri Ramanatha shrine) ,  there is a sanctum for Lord Vishnu as "Sethumadhava" between the second and third prakaras.  There are various shrines other deities.

There are twenty-two "thirthas"( bathing places) within and outside the temple.

A huge Nandi ( 6.7m long and 5m high sculptured bull) stands beyond the second Prakara(elevated wall) This Jyotirlinga temple is by tradition connected with Kashi.  A pilgrimage to Kashi is not considered complete without a pilgrimage to Rameshwaram. This temple is also famous as Kashi of South India.
