Kodaikanal means 'The Gift of Forest'.  True to its name, this Hill Station is surrounded by deep and dense forest.    Situated at an altitude of 6,854 feet above sea level, it is a charming little hill Station nick-named as 'The Princess of Hill Stations'.

Kodaikanal, also called Kodai, is 520 km from Capital city Chennai, 264 km from Ooty and 120 Km from Madurai.

Kodaikanal lake :It is a man- made star-shaped lake.  Earlier, it was a marshy land.  During the British Empire, the then Collector Sir Vere Levinge converted this marshy land into a Lake giving it a shape of star. This lake covers an area of nearly 60 acres surrounded by trees.  It lies right in the centre of Kodaikanal.  Facilities of boating in the lake and horse- riding around are available.

Solar Observatory :It is at a distance of 3 km from the lake.   One of the only three solar observatories in the world, Kodaikanal observatory was established 75 back at the highest point of this hill station( 2343 m above sea level) . Here you can watch our solar system in miniature.

Fairy Falls : The crystal clear water is its vital attribute.  For this, the falling water looks so fair that one may imagine a shape of fairy from the point to origin to the falling point at to its foot-hill   It is a beautiful picnic spot with additional advantages of  bath at its foot-fall and swimming in the stream.

Coaker's Walk :Barely a kilometer away from the Lake, it is a spot named after Lt. Coaker.  This spot is named Walk for the reason that you can enjoy the fascinating views all around while walking around this spot.

Kurinji Andavar Temple : Just 3 km from the star shaped lake, this temple stands.  It is dedicated to Lord Murugan.  The main attribute of this temple is location  on a secluded point from where  you can view Northern Plains and Palani Hills.

By Air

: Madurai is the nearest airport that is situated just around 120 Km from Kodaikanal. There are flights operating to and from all major cities of India. You can take a taxi from Madurai or a state transport bus for a 2 to 3 hrs drive from Madurai to Kodaikanal.

By Rail : Kodai Road Railway station is the nearest rail head at a distance of 80 km away from Kodaikanal.

By Road

: Kodaikanal is well connected to all major cities of Tamil Nadu. The Capital city Chennai is around 520 Km, Ooty is 264 km from here. Transport buses from nearby cities and towns ply to Kodaikanal with appreciable frequency. Luxury coaches are also an option. Inside the city, you will find cycle rickshaws and auto rickshaws for short distance commute. For longer distances, state run and private buses are present in good number. Taxis are also a good option for touring inside the city.
