Britishers developed Ooty
as a hill station to avoid heat of Indian summer. But it soon turned into crowd puller. So they developed an eqally beatiful hill station 19 km. away for themselves. This is Coonoor - the second largest hill station in the Nilgiris once inhabited by Coon and Toda hill tribes. The town spanning 14 km. is divided into upper and lower Coonoor.

21 kms from Coonoor, Kotahiri is known Coffee plantations, Elk Falls, Rangaswamy Pillar and Peak and Kodanand view point.
Other places to visit near Coonoor are Lady Canning's seat, the Pomological Station and the Ralliah Dam. Best time to visit this place between the months of October and March although the weather is pleasant throughout the year.
