Varkala Beach

Varkala is a comparatively secluded beach unlike other beaches closer the city. You can relax in peace and tranquility here.  To add to your secluded sojourn, go further north of the main beach and discover a chain of  smaller beaches with black volcanic sand.
This  Beach is located 51 Kms away from Thiruvananthapuram, capital city of  Kerala and 37 km from Kollam by road.  It is 3 kms from the local railway station.

Unique features of the Beach
This golden sand  beach is surrounded by high rocky cliffs and coconut groves. Two main cliffs on its North and South are high and steep with added advantage of rich mineral springs.
Watch sunset from this Beach - the sun dipping slowly down the horizon colouring the sky with changing red and orange hues.
Enjoy the the sight of  backwaters blending with the salty waters of the Arabian Sea in backwater crusine besides enjoying swimming, sunbathing, water sports, water sports like  Parasailing, Scuba diving, wind surfing etc.

Varkala beach is mainly famous as a Hindu pilgrimage Centre.  Visit the famous two centuary old  Janardana Swamy Temple.   Beach itself is called “Papnashini” meaning destroyer of sins.  Besides taking a dip in the Beach for destroying their sins, the devotees also perform a vitual called  “Vavubali”, for the ancestors souls to rest in peace on the new moon once a year. Sivagiri Mutt and the Samadhi of Sree Narayana Guru are other  places to visit.

According to historians, South Indians called ‘Darvid’  are the native inhabitants of India with a rich culture.  White skinned ‘Aryans’ migrated from Central Asia and other parts of the world and settled in India.   You can enjoy elaborate herbal massage traditionally practised for treatment of skin and other diseases here. You can watch and even participate in Kathakkali, traditional dance of  Kerala, concert organised at the Beach.

How to Reach Varkala
Rail: The railway station is 3 kms from the beach.
Bus: Varkala is 54 km from Thiruvananthapuram and 37 km from Kollam. Varkala is 90 minutes away on the bus and a pleasant convenient place to stop for a night or more or an afternoon when travelling between Alappuzha or Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram.
