"The traditional abode of Shipbuiders"
Beypore Beach in the Malabar region lies 10 km. south of Kozhikode in Kerala in the mouth of river Chaliyar. To start with, it was the spices and wealth of Malabar that first brought the Arabs, the Portuguese, the Dutch and the English to Kerala. To meet the need of transportation of these ingredients, ship building industry came up on coastal strip of Beypur Beach
So, this beach is known for being a millennium old commercial centre for ship building
. It is great tourist attraction
not only for calm and tranquil environment but also for age old ship building activity thriving even today in the same traditional way. For centuries, traditional shipbuilders, locally known as 'khalasis', still has a swelling market and continues to pull Middle Eastern buyers from across the Arabian Sea.
The age old boat building yard still exists in defiance of the technological advancements. You can still visit and watch the proficiency with which these skilled craftsmen use their hands in making the world famous 'uru'. It takes around 50 craftsmen (khalasis)
over a year to carve and shape an 'uru' out of teak and jackfruit timber. You can also buy miniature boats - made either from teak or coconut - from the Kairali Emporium in Kozhikode.
Besides ship building, Beypore is also famous as a voluminous fishing harbor
of this Beach is a stone bridge that stretches out for about 2 kilometers into the heart of Arabian Sea where you can walk on the turbulent Arabian Sea without touching its waters. Other place to visit is Thali Temple
Taste the fresh sea food
Don’t avoid entering into one of the uncanny stalls that cluster the beach side and sell many delicious sea-food items. Rejoice the taste of many colorfully decorated dishes you would have never tasted before. Also watch skeletons of huge boats and old shops selling older, rusted anchors on way to the harbor.
